I Tried Maderotherapy at Galway's First Wood Therapy Salon – and Booked a Second Appointment
Patricia Mc Crossan puts Luminous Wellbeing's full body lymphatic drainage massage to the test.

I have been practicing face lymphatic drainage massage and face yoga for many years, and in my quest to find a qualified practitioner for a full-body lymphatic drainage massage, I came across a treatment I had never heard of before: maderotherapy.

Offered at Luminous Wellbeing, Galway’s first wood therapy salon, its founder, Vanesa Sogolj is on a mission to bring healing, comfort, and transformation to women.

What is Maderotherapy?

Maderotherapy is a natural, non-invasive method to promote lymphatic fluid flow, reduce swelling and to remove waste and toxins.

Originating from Colombia, the wooden hand-held tools are not dissimilar to rolling pins and kitchen utensils and in the hands of a qualified and experienced therapist, combined with Brazilian massage, maderotherapy can be very effective.

What to expect during your treatment

My treatment started with a thorough medical history consultation. I was impressed with the beautiful treatment room and the time Vanesa took to learn about my health and to explain how the lymphatic system and the treatment works and the benefits that can be gained from it.

Although lymphatic drainage can offer many benefits, it's not a quick fix. Her advice about diet and movement and general lifestyle made a lot of sense.

What I experienced

Vanesa used both her hands and the maderotherapy tools at varying times to apply pressure to specific areas, including the arms, legs, and abdomen.

A significant amount of time was spent massaging the tummy area, with the pressure firm but never uncomfortable. I felt as though the massage was encouraging my digestive system to work more efficiently.

At times, the massage was slow, but much of it was fast and rhythmic. My lymphatic system was getting a well-needed workout.

The real benefits came a couple of days later, when I felt lighter and experienced a burst of energy.

The after effects

I was mindful to drink plenty of water in the days following the treatment and to get enough rest. Initially, I found myself peeing more often, and the day after, I felt that my bowels were working harder.

The real benefits came a couple of days later, when I felt lighter and experienced a burst of energy. I really benefited not only from the treatment itself but also from the advice Vanesa gave me. She is a therapist who practises what she preaches and believes that mornings set the tone for the day, staying focused on drinking lots of water, including lemon water in the morning, and eating a clean diet, and of course consistent movement.

I sometimes struggle to drink enough water, so tips like replacing some of my water intake with herbal teas that can be flavoursome and enjoyable, have worked well for me. Eating my main meal earlier in the day and opting for lighter meals in the evening has helped my digestion, improved my sleep, and ultimately given me more energy. It may not be possible every day, but I’m finding it relatively easy from Monday to Friday.

I have just booked my second treatment and am so looking forward to it.
