PureJoy's Joy Colleran on the Summer Skincare Ingredients to Look Out For

PureJoy's Joy Colleran on the Summer Skincare Ingredients to Look Out For
When it comes to skincare, choosing a product can be overwhelming – there's a wealth of information out there, a market overflowing with options, and everyone's skin is totally unique.

In partnership with PureJoy.

No-one understands this better than Joy Colleran, founder of skin clinic PureJoy in Galway City. Joy opened her clinic in 2000 after traveling the world, working as both a therapist and on the wholesale side of skincare.

Joy has dedicated her career to investing in skin, from machinery to products to knowledge, so that she can make quality treatments accessible and offer clients tailored programs that transform their skin health.

Passionate about skin longevity, she doesn't believe in a “quick fix”, but in achieving a beautiful, healthy glow through consistent care.

In the midst of one of Galway's most glorious heatwaves, we caught up with Joy to chat all things summer skincare, and to find out what ingredients really make the difference when you're building your routine.

Cleanse

When it comes to cleansers, in the summer, I usually recommend a foaming cleanser; it’s more refreshing. Ingredients wise it’s important to choose one that doesn’t have any ingredients that may be drying. An acidic base is preferable over an alkaline base, because it has less of that bubbly foam which can strip and damage the skin. You’re looking for a lather more than a really thick foam.

I recommend Ultraceuticals Ultra Brightening Foaming Cleanser – it’s great for summer and leaves the skin with a luminous finish.

Moisturise

In the summer, the air-con can be very drying, especially if you're working indoors. The goal is to get some water back into your skin. An important ingredient to look out for is hyaluronic acid. We have hyaluronic in every hydrating product we sell at PureJoy. I find with moisturisers, they're very individual, and some of our clients like to stick to the one range. But one I often recommend is the Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream.

SPF

You'll always need a good SPF in the summer – and you want to make sure it has a broad spectrum on it, with both UVA and UVB. There's different types of SPF; chemical and physical. If you have problematic skin with pigmentation, you definitely should be looking at a physical SPF.

Titanium and zinc are the two main ingredients to keep an eye out for, and you should be really applying it every two hours, because once that pigmentation gets any kind of UV exposure it can be difficult to shift or to manage – especially if it hasn't been looked after for a while during the summertime.

For a physical SPF, I highly recommend the AlumierMD Sheer Hydration SPF. It's 100% physical, and great for fair Irish skin, or anyone dealing with pigmentation, rosacea or inflammation. If you're looking for a chemical SPF, I find the Ultra UV PDM SPF 30 Hydrating to be brilliant. It's Australian, and they're used to protecting from rapid sun damage. That one is great if you want to look after your skin and don't have any underlying issues.

Spritz

A spritzer is a fantastic thing because you can reapply it over your makeup and after the gym, a swim, or being in the sauna! It's a really easy way to boost your hydration throughout the day and keep your skin healthy.

I recommend the Genosys Snow Booster Toner, it's an amazing all rounder – you can apply it after cleanser and before your serums, and then over your makeup as often as you want.
