Ring True: The Galway Guide to Buying an Engagement Ring

Ring True: The Galway Guide to Buying an Engagement Ring
When you’re buying a piece of jewellery that you’ll wear every day, it’s a choice worth taking your time with. We caught up with Galway experts in engagement rings, to help you find your forever piece.

Buying an engagement ring should feel like the start of something beautiful – not a financial headache or a crash course in diamond jargon. Between the pressure to find the perfect rock, the endless choices (bespoke design? lab-grown diamond? vintage?), and the looming price tags, it’s easy to spiral.

That's why we've compiled our guide to mastering the entire process, with experts weighing in on everything from stones to sets.

Be trend-savvy

Trends can offer great inspiration, but authenticity is paramount. If a trend truly resonates with your sense of self, go for it. Otherwise, feel free to ignore the noise. “We don’t follow trends because antique pieces never go out of style – the classic three-stone diamond was as popular 100 years ago as it is now,” explains Michelle Marren, co-owner of The Antiques Room.

“Buying your engagement ring is a delicious trauma, exciting and terrifying,” says Phyllis MacNamara, owner of Galway antique jewellers Cobwebs. “When choosing your ring, the first thing you should look at is the shape of the ring on your hand – like all jewellery it should enhance you and reflect your personality.”

“Pieces can look very different on, so it’s great to be able to come in and to get an idea of what suits you,” advises Richard Hartmann, owner of Galway city’s  Hartmann Jewellers, who offer a dedicated private space where couples can take their time and explore different options without pressure.

Vintage versus modern

“There are many reasons why antique rings hold such appeal,” enthuses Michelle. “For some, it’s the sense of history and romance that simply can’t be replicated in a modern piece. For others, it’s the unique design and craftsmanship - where no two rings are ever quite the same. And for many, the sustainable nature of choosing a piece from the past makes it all the more meaningful.”

Others want something that walks the line between vintage and modern. They want a ring that feels ‘fashion’ and relevant, but also timeless. It’s not so much about a big diamond anymore - they want quality over size, or a unique shape.

“We have a bespoke service which is ideal for clients looking to design something completely unique - whether it’s reimagining an heirloom or creating a ring from scratch,” explains Richard. We also offer computer-aided design (CAD), which allows clients to visualise their ring before it’s made, ensuring it’s not just beautiful but fit for everyday wear.”

Know your 4cs (and which one matters most)

The 4Cs – cut, colour, clarity, and carat – are the holy grail of diamond shopping. But here’s a secret: cut matters the most. A well-cut diamond will sparkle brilliantly, even if the other Cs aren’t perfect. Prioritise brilliance over sheer size. “The round brilliant cut remains the all-time classic as it delivers the most light and sparkle,” explains Hartmann.

Think about style and setting

Beyond the cut, the setting style plays a huge role in the ring’s overall look and feel. “For us, the solitaire continues to be a favourite; clean, elegant, and timeless,” says Richard. “Many opt for subtle design twists like hidden halos or three-stone settings. The beauty of our rings is that every setting can be matched with weddings and eternity bands to either complement or completely evoke the look.”

Michelle at The Antiques Room feels that choosing one signature style would be “a bit like picking a favourite child! But if we had to choose, we’d say either the forever classic three stone diamond ring or a sparkling sapphire and diamond cluster.”

Lab-grown versus natural?

There is a romanticism to a natural diamond – some people like the gravitas and luxury feel it offers. But laboratory diamonds have been around for the past 70 years, and in recent times they’ve become gem-quality diamonds meaning they match the grade of a real diamond. Structurally, chemically, their light return, their durability and the fire of the stone are the exact same, and they have the exact same certifications.

“We carry a handpicked selection of certified lab-grown diamonds,” Richard says. “Interest has grown rapidly, and for good reason – they offer clients a larger look for their budget while still delivering beauty and sparkle. For some, it’s the perfect way to create their dream engagement ring; for others, they make a wonderful right-hand or second ring option.”

Consider alternative stones

Diamonds are classic, but they’re not the only game in town. Sapphires, emeralds and rubies are having a major moment. They’re unique and give off an effortlessly cool, non-cookie-cutter vibe. Michelle agrees, “couples who come to us are often looking for something a little different, which is  why they’re usually very open to exploring coloured gemstone pieces, all perfectly suited to be worn as meaningful and lasting engagement rings.”

“Keep an open mind. What you love online may surprise you in person.”

How do you know it’s the one?

If you leave the consultation thinking about it and are still thinking about it the next day, and the next… chances are, it’s a strong contender. Ultimately, you need to trust your instincts, your eye and your judgement. Ignore trends, ignore what your friends and family think, and pick the ring that makes your heart sing.

Promise me this…

If you’re looking for a promise ring representing love and commitment, then an authentic Irish Claddagh Ring is a perfect choice. The iconic Claddagh Ring, or fáinne Chladaigh, symbolises love, loyalty and friendship and has been used as an Irish promise ring since its creation here in Galway over 400 years ago.

We’re particularly drawn to the handcrafted range of designs at Claddagh & Celtic Jewellery in the heart of the Latin Quarter. Treat your beloved here to a birthstone Claddagh ring; a classic gold or silver Claddagh ring or a Claddagh Pride design ring with six coloured stones.
