5 November Events Worth Leaving Your Cosy Couch For
From festive markets to Italian feasts and glowing light shows, Galway's winter line up promises to brighten up the chilliest November days and nights.

Pasta Pop-Up

Shake off the Sunday Scaries by making a date with this Italian pop-up at Aniar, on November 3rd and December 15th. SUD is a collaboration between pasta maker Tony Carelli (@pastaacasabytony) and Aniar's Claudio Schiano Di Cola, and their nine-course tasting menu (€75pp) includes dishes like fried pillow dough with lardo, pappardelle ripieno with pumpkin puree, Roberto's tiramisu, and miso caramel. Two sittings are available (2pm and 6:30pm) but it’s selling fast, and it’s just lunch slots left for November 3rd. Vegetarian options are also available. Italian craft beers and Grape Circus wines will be served.

“We started playing with the ideas of what we wanted to do with Italian food and arrived at SUD, which means either ’South’ or as an abbreviation for ‘without a direction’,” explains Tony.

Both struggle with the lack of authenticity in a lot of Italian food in Ireland. “Generally speaking, we find Italian food here quite boring. It’s always the same and rarely authentic. We wanted to be authentic but also add bold flavours and ideas, using where possible Irish ingredients.” However, don’t expect complete tradition. “Authenticity can sometimes mean restriction, so we land somewhere in between what Nonna would love, and completely disagree with, all at the same time.” atasteofgalway.com

Art attack

A flowerpot painted by Arvo Pärt

Have you ever been in a creative rut? If so, you'll be able to relate to Estonian composer Arvo Pärt who found himself in a creative crisis in 1970s. “Back then I didn’t even know if I would be able to compose music ever again,” he said.

And so he began painting and decorating flower pots, and it's this that has inspired a fun and engaging workshop from The Galway Music Residency in collaboration with Estonia's Arvo Pärt Centre on Wednesday 6th November at 11am in The Space, Aras na Mac Leinn, University of Galway.

During the free workshop, you'll get to explore "the delicate power of art and music". No experience is required, simply message info@thegalwaymusicresidency.ie to secure your spot.

Salvage Scenes

Portrait by Shane J Horan

Where were you in November 2002? It was in this month that multi-venue, contemporary art festival TULCA first presented a programme in Galway city. Now in its 22nd year, and running from November 1-17, this year’s title is ‘The Salvage Agency’, which explores the role of art in environmental action and contemporary ecology, and is curated by Michele Horrigan.

Spanning multiple venues and with over 20 participating artists, including Cork artist and printmaker Kate O’Shea, pictured, there are new commissions, exhibitions, public talks, screenings, performances, and a specially-commissioned publication.

“Galway, on the edge of the northeast Atlantic, is a unique location for a heightened awareness of what is at stake. Explorations of landscape, seascape and nature, public space, colonial history, political structures, the industrial complex and folk narratives are all pertinent,” says Michele Horrigan.

“These are paths taken by our collective society in the shaping of today’s world and a contemporary Europe. Can art create an undercurrent of improvisation and frugality, haphazard formality, and change to offer new perspectives, provocations and empathy? From the wreckage, can art nourish a new reality?”
