Galway Through an Artist's Eyes: Emer Whelan's Favourite Places
Working from her workshop in the city, Irish artist Emer Whelan creates distinctive contemporary pieces that are inspired by "the landscapes, folklore, and quiet poetry of the West of Ireland".

From market breakfasts and woodland walks to the restaurants and design stores she returns to again and again, here she shares her favourite haunts.
Galway is not just a city or county to me, it feels and operates like one big community network. I love the scenery, the characters, and the endless choices of new places to be discovered.
I am deeply influenced by the history and folklore of this gorgeous Island. Whether it’s urban spots or Connemara, there are endless shapes and colours here that manifest in my work. I am also a massive fan of our many festivals – that energy motivates me like no other.
I live with an autoimmune condition, something which influences the healing aspect of my designs, so my days off are steeped in restful activities.
It usually starts with a stroll downtown, taking in the bustle and architecture, followed by a bagel at St. Nicolas market. Then I’ll grab a coffee and head for a gander around Galway’s West End and canals.
I’m also partial to a walk in Barna Woods or on the prom, followed by the occasional dip in the sea with friends and a warm cuppa in Blackrock Cottage.

I always recommend Galway City Museum to visitors, followed by a trip around the corner to Magpie Bakery for the best pastries. I love some soup and a sandwich in The Bunch of Grapes – it’s all they serve for lunch and it’s perfect every time. It’s also our kids’ favourite.

Supporting Irish design and local stores is a must for me. In Galway, I love Cregal Art, Outset Design, My Shop Granny Likes It and Coffeewerk + Press.

For dinner, I love Daróg. The wine experience is exceptional, the food is delicious and they support local artists on their walls.

With two small children, it’s not very often we are out late, but when we are, you’ll find us in O’Connells for a catch up, or down in Monroe's at a great gig.
This year, I’m looking forward to unveiling new work. I also can’t wait for the city to bloom with inspiration and colour, and to spend the longer evenings in my studio.
