Scandi Style and Better Living: Inside Coffeewerk + Press Owner Daniel Ulrich's Mood Board

Scandi Style and Better Living: Inside Coffeewerk + Press Owner Daniel Ulrich's Mood Board
With a keen interest in vintage Scandinavian chairs and books on living minimally, it's no wonder Daniel Ulrich dreamed up a café that is described as 'emphasising the meaningful, quiet moments'.

Owner of award-winning coffee and design store Coffeewerk + Press (recently named the 32nd best coffee shop in the world), Daniel shares with us what else he's dreaming of.

What was the last thing you bought and loved?
A lamp by German silversmith Christian Dell.

Do you collect anything?
Scandinavian vintage chairs. I’m fascinated by the history of design and the influence they had on architecture and product design from the 1940s-1970s. Chairs are a little window into this world.

How would you describe your personal style?
Minimal, with attention to detail and craftsmanship.

Is there a place that had a big impact on your life?
In relation to design, Copenhagen for its deep history of architecture and design and Berlin for its vibrant art and coffee scene.

Is there an Irish brand or product you love?
I love Superfolk, a design studio from the West of Ireland. They make functional everyday items that are rooted and inspired by the Irish landscape.

What is your favourite object in your home?
A brass candle sconce by Swedish maker Malin Appelgren. It gives off the most beautiful light once the candle is lit.

What’s on your wishlist?
A hand-forged kitchen knife by Sam Gleeson.

Is there a book that inspired you creatively?
The Monocle Guide to Better Living and The Monocle Guide To Good Business are still books that I draw inspiration from continuously over the past ten years. I also found Stillness by Norm Architects creatively inspiring.

Is there an individual artist, designer or style era that inspires you?
I get a lot of inspiration from minimal design, which is rooted in nature. The Japanese have a long history of exploring this style.

What is the last thing you recommended to a friend?
Hand-felted wooden slippers.

What are you looking forward to this summer?
Having the craic with my wonderful team in our little cafe on Quay Street.
