Heading into the months of wedding planning can definitely be daunting, but the right support can ensure it's as joyful and memorable an experience as the day itself.

Cora Duggan is the The Lodge at Ashford Castle's in-house wedding and events manager. “I’ve been involved in wedding planning for nearly 10 years, and it continues to be the most rewarding and fulfilling career I could imagine,” she says. “Being part of such a significant chapter in a couple’s life, helping to create unforgettable moments for them and their guests, is a true privilege.”

Read on for an insight into Cora's approach, her pick of 2025 wedding trends to watch and top tips on planning a joyful, stress-free day.

How it begins: planning a wedding at The Lodge at Ashford Castle

The planning journey begins from the very first interaction, whether it’s an email, a phone call, or a spontaneous visit. “From there, we invite couples for a private viewing of The Lodge and its amenities, offering a personal tour of the spaces where their wedding celebrations could unfold,” explains Cora. “We tailor each visit to the couple’s individual interests, knowing that every love story is unique and every wedding vision is different. With our experienced and passionate events team, we provide expert guidance, creative inspiration, and trusted recommendations throughout the process.”

Whether the wedding is a year away or just a few months out, the team offer regular check-ins, phone calls, emails, and onsite meetings to ensure every detail is thoughtfully planned. “We understand that each couple will need different levels of support at different times and we’re here for all of it; as a sounding board, a problem-solver, or simply an extra pair of hands.”

One of the highlights of the planning process is the menu tasting. It’s a chance to meet the Executive Chef, Jonathan, and experience the culinary offering from beautifully crafted dishes to perfectly paired wines. More than just a meal, this is also a key moment to reconnect, review progress, and dive into the finer details as we move into the final stages of planning your unforgettable day.

“On the wedding day itself, my team and I are fully present from start to finish," continues Cora. "Whether it’s holding a bouquet, fluffing a train, sewing a last-minute seam, coordinating photo locations, or ensuring the couple gets a few quiet moments together; we’re there for it all.”

For me, one of the most rewarding parts of planning weddings at The Lodge is the privilege of being part of such a meaningful day in a couple’s life.

How personalisation makes each wedding unique

“Helping couples personalise their wedding starts with getting to know them, their story, personalities, preferences, and values, so we can thoughtfully weave those elements into their day,” explains Cora. What feels meaningful to one couple may not suit another, so it’s essential to take a tailored approach.

Of course, personalisation isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about making the day feel authentically theirs. “As planners, we’re not just working with the couple; we become a part of their wedding journey. Finding the right way to communicate and connect helps us build trust and understand their needs more deeply, which ultimately leads to a more meaningful celebration. ”

Cora's pro wedding planning tips

Cora's top tips for wedding planning? keep your guests in mind throughout the entire wedding planning process. “When the day flows smoothly from the ceremony to the drink’s reception and into the evening celebration, it creates a more enjoyable experience not only for your guests but also for you and your bridal party,”. Consider the venue layout carefully and plan transportation between locations, such as from the church to the reception venue, to ensure everything runs seamlessly.

Most importantly, Cora advises couples to be mindful of time. “Building a timeline that allows you to fully enjoy each moment and be present in your celebration is one of the best gifts you can give yourselves.”

“Also, think about accessibility”, she continues. “If you have guests with reduced mobility or young children, make sure all key areas are suitable and easy for them to navigate, so everyone can comfortably take part in the day. ”

“I firmly believe that wedding stress can be greatly reduced through careful planning and preparation – most importantly, by sharing a clear and unified vision with your partner,” she says. “I never want any couple, whether I meet them professionally or personally, to look back on their wedding day and say, “I would never do that again,” simply because of stress or worries over minor details. To-do lists will become your best friends throughout the planning process, and I recommend dividing tasks between you as a couple. Don’t hesitate to involve your bridal party and close friends, especially in the final weeks leading up to the big day, they’ll be happy to help!”

When it comes to wedding trends, a growing trend Cora has noticed is the rise of rehearsal dinners. “An elegant and intimate way for families to come together before the celebrations begin, helping to ease any pre-wedding nerves,” she says. “Champagne towers have also become a popular choice here at The Lodge this year, creating that perfect moment and of course photo opportunity!”

“We’re also seeing a vibrant comeback of bold, colourful weddings paired with striking tablescapes that truly make a statement,” she continues. “Meanwhile, bridal fashion is embracing a return to timeless silhouettes, complemented by romantic, floor-length veils that add an air of classic elegance.”

Everyone gathered is there to celebrate you as a couple, so take the time to soak it all in.

Another tip I often share is to limit your options. With so many choices available, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Be decisive, and once you’ve booked a supplier, try to resist the urge to keep searching or second-guessing. The same goes for dress shopping, trust your instincts and enjoy the moment.

Above all, savour the little things during the planning, the lead-up, and especially on the wedding day itself. Everyone gathered is there to celebrate you as a couple, so take the time to soak it all in. Remember, the day really does fly by!
