We’ve compiled some of the best pitstops along the west coast that we can’t wait to visit this summer – from sun-drenched swim spots to ‘gram-worthy views and eateries that champion the best of what the shoreline has to offer.

Whether it's a Blue Flag beach with sparkling waters, a woodland walk with grazing deer, or a waterfront restaurant with fresh lobster, there's plenty here worth pulling over for.

Deadly Dips 

Take the plunge in these beautiful wild spots scattered across the west.

Inis Mór Wormhole

A spectacular natural feature, the Wormhole or “Poll na bPéist” in Inis Mór is one of the island’s main attractions. Be warned, it’s not meant for swimming – just for admiring the colossal waves crashing in.

Mannin Bay

Just ten minutes Southwest of Clifden and a little off the beaten track, Mannin Bay is famed for clear waters and coral sand. There’s a 4.5 mile hiking trail and some great snorkeling spots. 

Keem Bay

Keem Bay in Mayo is a horseshoe bay with a Blue Flag beach. Sheltered by cliffs, it’s home to seals, starfish and even the occasional basking shark. You’ll feel like you’re in a postcard.

Pollock Sea Holes

These sea pools in Clare are uncovered when the tide is out, so make sure to time your visit. They’re great for families who like to have a low-key splash and seek out little fish.

Bishops Pool

A hidden gem in Sligo, Bishop’s Pool is a natural infinity pool with a beautiful view. Visit at sunset to really have your breath taken away – the view stretches as far as Donegal!

Belmullet Tidal Pool

A man-made tidal pool in Blacksod Bay, this has been named one of the best seawater swimming pools in the UK and Europe, and is as fun to swim in as it is gorgeous.

Cliffs of Moher Walk

Ideal for the seasoned walker, this stunning, salt-aired trail features an exposed cliff top path and views of Galway Bay, Doolin, the Aran Islands and the vast Atlantic Ocean.

Queen Maeve's Trail

This rewarding 6km looping walk takes visitors up the northern slopes of Knocknarea, with over 500 wooden steps. You’ll pass Megalithic and Bronze Age remains, magical forests and spectacular views.

Coole Park

Woodland walks, grazing deer and seasonal lakes can all be found in Coole Park. A thousand-acre nature reserve with a walled garden and a cobblestone café, it’s well worth the visit. 

Benbulben

Standing tall above Drumcliffe village, Benbulben is one for the adventurous. This majestic hike has glacial tracks and unique flora, plus a flat topped summit. Visit the grave of W.B.Yeats near the base.

Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden

Step into history at this striking Victorian castle and impressive Heritage Garden. The iconic visitor attraction is set in the mountainside of Connemara, complete with neo-gothic church and tea rooms.

Kilkee Cliffs

Some of the best scenery in Ireland can be found on the Kilkee Cliff Walk, just 5km from Kilkee town. See the shipwreck site of Intrinsic Bay and the glorious views from Moveen hill!
