A New Way To Move: The Unique Galway Fitness Class Incorporating Motion, Music and Connection
Autumn can be a time of personal reinvention. The parallels are easy to draw - as the nature around us sheds its leaves to make way for new growth, we can too.

If it’s a reset you’re after, Galway’s own Gill Carroll, best known for well-loved restaurant 56 Central, is offering just that. Reinventing a way for us to move and connect, both with ourselves and others, Gill has devised the wellness class ‘Shake The Dust’, blending movement, music and coaching.

The class is devised around letting go of the everyday stressors and tension that we carry with us. It cleverly blends yoga, somatic movement and coaching to help you discover the joy of moving.

Gill truly believes that music and movement can shift how we feel and act. So, attendees can expect lots of shaking, jumping, resting, dancing and yoga to uplifting playlists created with DJ Benoit.

A method that has been used as tension release for decades, somatic movement is a body-focused practice that involves moving with full-body awareness. Somatic movement aims to focus on how you’re feeling, rather than having a specific fitness goal in mind. Exercises involve slow and intentional movements like walking, shaking, stretching, or dancing, usually combined with breathwork.

The benefits are endless, too, including reduced physical tension and pain, improved posture and balance, increased flexibility, and better emotional well-being and stress management.

If you’re not sure your fitness levels are suitable for the class, fear not, as Gill has said that the floor is open for anyone, regardless of your abilities.

“Gill is passionate about creating inclusive and affordable spaces where everyone can let go of stress, find joy in movement, and reconnect with themselves and others. Her work goes beyond fitness.”

Upcoming events this autumn include ‘Shake the Dust’ classes, yoga sessions and a one-day retreat on 27th September.

The classes come as part of Galway City Council's Café Lates pilot initiative, launched in response to public demand for a thriving café culture after 6 pm. Café Lates supports local businesses in trialling extended opening hours and offering diverse, alcohol-free evening experiences.
