Five Places To Book Now For Your Annual Christmas Catch-Up
The holiday season is a time of celebration and fun, but it’s also one of the busiest periods. Between gift-wrapping, meal prep, and juggling everyone’s schedules, booking a spot for your annual festive meet-up can easily slip down the to-do list. That’s why planning ahead is so important.
From cosy cocktail bars perfect for a cocktail night with the girls to incredible food experiences, here are five places in Galway City to book now.
For the foodies
Less than an hour outside the city centre, you’ll find Lignum, a one-star Michelin restaurant worth travelling for. Housed in a modern barn conversion with a distinctly Scandi vibe, the team rely on an ancient way of cooking over an open flame, which lends a distinctive smoky flavour profile to the food. This December, they’re running a 10-course tasting menu, built around seasonal ingredients, reimagined in new and exciting ways.
For cocktails with the girls
For some of the best (if not the best) cocktails in town, Rúibín has to be top of the list. Their menus (both food and drinks) are seasonal, so change regularly, but expect unique house infusions (think salted caramel rum), inventive cocktail combinations, and some pretty stellar non-alcoholic options too. Downstairs at the bar, their food offering centres on a selection of carefully chosen snacks, sides, and small plates, while upstairs, the restaurant overlooks the city’s historic docklands, making it the perfect place to settle in for a long-overdue catch-up.
For a night away
If you don’t live in or around the city centre and want to treat yourself to an overnight stay—to prolong the festivities without the worry of taxis or lift-sharing—then you can’t go wrong with The Dean, who has all bases covered. Located within minutes of Eyre Square’s Christmas Markets, the rooms are modern but comfortable with big, bouncy beds. Other highlights include Power Gym and hydrotherapy pool, to which guests can enjoy complimentary access. Up on the rooftop is Sophie’s, offering panoramic views of the city and a menu that will kickstart your Christmas celebration in style.
For family gatherings
Finding somewhere to accommodate different age groups can be tricky, particularly during the festive period when places are usually packed to the rafters and don’t want little bodies running around. The Connacht is big enough to fit large groups, offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and its on-site restaurant, Reubens, has a fantastic children’s menu. Come Christmas time, Santa’s Afternoon Tea is always a big hit. Starting 30 November and running every Sunday until December 21, it’s a special way to make memories with family and friends with small children. Tickets are €20 per child or €95 for a family pass (2 adults, 2 children).
For a group
A firm favourite amongst locals and visitors alike, Hyde Bar is ideal for larger parties that don’t want to scrimp on substance. Nestled down on Forster Street, it’s near enough to the madness without being smack, bang in the middle of it. Surrounded by boho-inspired décor, glamorous touches, and chic furnishings, the interiors provide a wonderful backdrop for photos, with both festive lunch and dinner menu options depending on your needs. If you need even more space, their dedicated events space, Jekyll, is also available for private hire.
